Did you have your treatment elsewhere but have no aftercare in place?

Let us take care of that for you!

We welcome you as a new patient and invite you to join our Retention Club. Our Retention Club is designed to give you peace of mind knowing you can continue to have your teeth monitored by a leading specialist orthodontic practice.

  • Retention is a crucial stage of your orthodontic treatment. Our teeth are like the rest of our body, continually changing. Everyone’s teeth are different, and some people’s teeth have the potential to move more than others. Teeth always have the potential to move, which is why we recommend that retainers be worn indefinitely—to minimise the risk of your teeth moving from their current position.

  • Following your treatment, we provide you with removable vacuum retainers. If you delay the collection of retainers and your teeth move, you will incur additional costs. It is your responsibility to maintain your retainers. Your vacuum retainers must be worn every night for at least 10-12 hours unless otherwise instructed by our clinical team. If your retainers start to feel tight, increase the wear until they feel more comfortable.

How to look after your vacuum retainer

Your retainers must be taken out to eat, drink and clean. To clean your retainers, you must use cold water and a Retainer Brite tablet which can be purchased from us. Never use hot water or boiling water. We also recommend brushing them twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush with non-abrasive toothpaste and water.

If you have any problems regarding your retainers, please get in touch with the practice straight away and bring retainers with you to every appointment.

  • A bonded retainer is known as a “long-term retention” and is made from a fine piece of nickel wire that is adhered to the back of the teeth so that it is not visible from the front. This retainer is behind your front four to six teeth on the upper and lower arch. This retainer is placed to maintain and hold the alignment of your teeth once the braces have been removed. We recommend you have this retainer alongside your vacuum retainers for as long as possible.

How to look after your bonded retainer

Cleaning instructions will be given by our clinical team when fitted. It is advised that you brush your teeth as usual. Also, it would be best to use “super floss” or “Tepee Interdental Brushes” every day to get around the areas the toothbrush may not reach. The main problem of not looking after your bonded retainer is inadequate cleaning. We recommend continuing regular appointments with a dental hygienist. If you do not brush them thoroughly, plaque can accumulate around the bonded retainer causing damage to the enamel of your teeth, which can lead to tooth decay. Do not pick at the bonded retainer, as this can cause it to come loose. Types of food and eating must be taken into consideration. Avoid biting hard foods on your front teeth, like fruit & vegetables or crusty rolls. You must chew on your back teeth and cut food into smaller pieces. If your bonded retainer comes off or loose, please get in touch with the practice immediately for an appointment and advice.
